All of Mrs. Sienkiewicz's books are based on the traditional Baltimore Album quilts. The
books are lavishly illustrated in full color. The patterns are based on papercuts,
elaborate versions of what children used to do with scissors and folded paper, like
snowflakes. One-fourth of the pattern is given fullsize in the book; the other
three-fourths are mirror images of the first.
Baltimore Beauties and Beyond : Studies in Classic Album Quilt Applique Volume 1
by Elly Sienkiewicz and Bobbie Sloan
review by L.
Mrs. Sienkiewicz's books are a wonderful introduction to the highest form of fine
needlework: the applique quilt based on quilts made in the city of Baltimore, Maryland,
in the 1800s. They are a standard which serves as a model of design excellence. The
first volume is primarily a text on how to applique, and is arranged in lessons in which
the reader is shown, on a step by step basis, how to do the illustrated blocks. All
blocks are shown in full color and full-size patterns are given.

Baltimore Beauties and Beyond : Studies in Classic Album Quilt Applique
by Elly Sienkiewicz
(Volume 2)
review by L.
Mrs. Sienkiewicz includes a fascinating discussion of picture blocks, scherenschnitty
(German paper cutting) bordered blocks, and a huge section of quilt gallery pictures
in both black-and-white and in full color. Patterns are given for some blocks. One
pattern is a delightful block showing a girl milking a cow. Another, called "Goose
Girl", pictuers a girl with her geese in front of a stately mansion. There is a block,
"Waterfowling", which depicts a man and his dogs hunting. The other blocks are just as
picturesque.

Applique Paper Greetings
by Elly Sienkiewicz
review by L.
Mrs. Sienkiewicz has broken away from her traditional Baltimore Album for this delightful
applique-based craft book. She gives full instructions for cutting fabric shapes,
including some elaborate shapes based on Baltimore Album quilts, as well as other modern
ideas, and shows how they may be made into stunning greeting cards. One example which
particularly appeals to me is a delightful fabric angel. She gives a number of patterns
such as a cowboy, fish, cat, reindeer, rabbit, Mrs. Cottontail, a parrot, and so
forth. A fun way to spend a day not sewing. :)
