Our Journey from Tibet : Based on a True Story
by Laurie Dolphin, photographs by Nancy Jo Johnson
This is a wonderful book! We follow the journey of Sunam, a little girl from a small
village in Tibet, to the Tibetan Children's Village in Dharamsala, India. We learn a
lot about traditional life in Tibet, the Chinese occupation, the hardships of the
journey, and life in the Children's Village, through a compelling, dramatic story and
gorgeous photographs. It closes with a letter from the Dalai Lama expressing his hopes
for the future of a free Tibet.

Man on the Moon
by Anastasia Suen, Illustratored by Benrei Huang
Brilliant. The text clearly captures one of the most exciting, uplifting
moments in human history - the first landing on the Moon. The author grabs the
interest of readers of all ages with her first sentence, and then delivers a fantastic
story. You feel the thrill of adventure and discovery, you experience the pride and
joy of landing on the Moon. Meanwhile, you accidentally learn details and historical
facts about the mission. It ends on a note of hope that encourages kids to dream
big and make it happen. Don't skip the author's note - it's a beautiful glance
into the personal excitement of one little girl on launch day.
Unfortunately, the pictures just aren't up to the level of the magnificent text. They
look like the work of an amateur trying to draw a cartoon, and pull the final product
down. Nevertheless, this book will become a favorite, read over and over again. Get the
NASA video, too, and show your kids the real thing. The book helps them understand
the launch, and memories of the launch will provide the illustration this text deserves.
